We all know of solar panels, low power lightbulbs, excellent insulation, etc. Are there any new or unconventional ways of saving on electricity costs?
raise the a/c three to five degrees above what you normally run it at and you’ll be suprised how quickly it’ll add up.

Free Home Electricity – Solar Powered House

Solar power is a very excellent source of power because it is renewable, environmental friendly and free. It would be a very nice thought to have a solar power system at home. But, due to the high setup cost ($2000 or more), not many people would use this system.
I am about to let you in on a small secret that can have you building your own solar panels for home use! By making your own solar power system that will save you thousands!
If you reckon buying a solar power system is too expensive for you, you can make it yourself with a much lower budget. You will need a solar panel first. You will use solar cells, wood plate, soldering iron, solder, flux, and tabbing to make a panel. These items are simple to get from local stores and you would not need any special tool. Even a novice can make it without problem.Solar panels are the wave of the future! So where do we start? How do you get your hands on the material to start building your own solar panels? Well lets first find out what solar panels are. That way you at least sound educated when you pitch this to your family!
Solar cells are nearly always made from silicon, that is the same material we use to make computer chips. Silicon is one of the worlds most common elements, and is a leading component of sand and many kinds of rocks. A solar cell is built in layers, with two layers of silicon separated by a thin layer of insulating material. All three layers work together and convert sunlight into electricity.
When sunlight hits the solar cell, it produces an electric charge. Like a battery, the charge is positive on one side of the cell, and negative on the other side. Connecting a wire to the positive and to the negative side will allow electricity to flow. This flow, or current, can be used to power a small light bulb, turn an electric motor, or recharge a battery.
Broken solar cells can be bought for cheap money, and THEY STILL WORK! That is what I recommend. Of course you will need framing material to mount to the top of your house and two pieces of glass. The rest is pretty simple, hook your panels together, positive to positive and negative to negative, that way you get only 2 wires when you are done.Take these two wires and connect them to your power inverter and connect the power inverter to the electrical grid to your house. These steps seem hard but can be broken up into much simpler and simpler steps.
I recommend this site if you want to get more in depth information and a step-by-step process of buying, installing and profiting from solar panels

ENERCON E126 – The World’s Largest Wind Turbine
This is the Enercon E-126, the first wind turbine with 6 MW rated power, rotor diameter: 126m (413ft), hub height: 135m(450ft). Two of these giant wind power units have been built for testing at an onshore location, Rysumer Nacken, near Emden, in the northwest of Germany.
Here each WPU is expected to produce about 18 Mio kWh per year, enough for more than 4,500 homes.

Solar Tower – EnviroMission reduces green house CO2 emission
EnviroMission, Ltd. (www.enviromission.com.au; US Stock Market: EVOMY, Australian Stock Exchange: EVM) is a renewable energy developer of sustainable “green” energy solutions for the energy market. EnviroMission aims to be one of Australia’s leading producers of clean renewable energy. EnviroMission holds the proprietary rights to Solar Tower technology, a large-scale renewable energy technology based on simple fundamentals of physics — hot air rises. Solar Tower technology has the potential to offer competitive renewable energy with equal reliability to fossil fuel generators.
A single 200MW Solar Tower power station will provide enough electricity to power around 400,000 households. The energy output will represent an annual saving of more than 1,960,000 tonnes of greenhouse CO2 gases from entering the environment when compared to brown coal emissions in Victoria. The greenhouse savings equate to the removal of approximately 500,000 cars from the road. The Australian Solar Tower project consists of six distinct phases, the first two of which (project optimization and pre-feasibility commercialization) have already been completed. The third phase (final feasibility), paving the way for the implementation of the next three phases (final design, construction, and commercial operation).

What is the next revolution in solar cells?
First generation solar cells started with a large amount of Silicon and only single junctions.
Second Generation solar cells called thin film cells, started with much less Silicon. In addition first generation solar was improved with multiple junctions.
Third Generation Solar Cells aim to keep Silicon use low while enhancing cell efficiencies.
In addition there are technologies that blend electricity generation with heat generation. And also aim to reduce installation and system design costs through building inverters inside solar panels. There is also technologies that use multiple junctions and concentration to enhance efficiencies. And aim to use bio-based plastics to replace petroleum based plastics used as back sheets in solar panels.
Thought’s of the future include thin film concentration solar cells, thin film multi-junction cells, and thin film multi-junction concentrating cels.
They have recently come up with a way to turn radiation directly into electricity. Current cells must use photons only, the new ones will work with any type of radiation. Also, current radiation power sources utilize the heat to boil water to turn a wheel to make electricity. When it is perfected and mass produced it will save a lot of energy loss and be able to make electrical energy from just about any radioactive source.
